Linux.com to Get a Makeover

The neglected Linux.com domain is about to get a facelift courtesy of the Linux Foundation, which said Tuesday it will take over the site and jazz up its content.

SourceForge, which previously maintained Linux.com, stopped publishing original content to it in January. The Linux Foundation will now provide that content, as well as host the site and provide general oversight. SourceForge will continue to sell Linux.com's advertising.

The Linux Foundation, based in San Francisco, is a nonprofit organization that aims to promote the use of Linux. SourceForge, based in Mountain View, California, oversees and hosts a group of community-driven Web sites, including user-generated forums, online marketplaces and e-commerce sites.

The foundation plans to evolve the site over the next few months from primarily a news source to more of a collaborative site with original content from the foundation, as well as from the Linux community via online forums, the foundation said Tuesday. It will also extend existing content and community programs on its own Web site to the revamped Linux.com.

The foundation is working on a new beta version of the site that it will release in a few months, it said. As of Tuesday, it has launched an "IdeaForge," accessed by a button on the site, to gather feedback and ideas about the site's future direction.
